Online Informational Resources for New Private Well Owners
The NGWA has a wealth of free online options for learning about water well systems.
Register with the website, and you can access free online lessons. Each lesson lasts less than 15 minutes. They cover a wide range of topics, including water testing and treatment, groundwater conservation and well maintenance.
For more detailed information, you can watch prerecorded webinars. The NGWA offers highly detailed videos, about 30-60 minutes in length, addressing important topics for new water well owners.
If you prefer to learn by reading, you can sign up for the private well owner email tip sheet. Each month, the NGWA will send you useful information and advice about caring for your water well system.
Handy Smartphone App for Private Water Well Owners
Want to be told when it’s time for water testing and well maintenance? There’s an app for that.
The NGWA’s well owner app is available from both the iTunes Store and the Google Play Store. Once installed, the app provides important private well owner information and allows you to set up automatic reminders for periodic water testing and maintenance tasks.
If you don’t have a smartphone, a web-based version of the app is also available.
The Private Water Well Owner’s Most Important Tool
The NGWA online tools and smartphone app provide a variety of helpful resources for new private well owners. However, the most important tool in your arsenal is the annual water well checkup. The NGWA recommends that every well owner have a routine maintenance inspection each year, conducted by a licensed and certified well service company.

An annual well inspection typically includes a flow test to evaluate your well output as well as a check of the pump motor, pressure tank and pressure switch contact. Testing for possible water contaminants is also a part of a routine well checkup.
